November 1,
2008 -
Online Video Service,
Inc. (OVS) announced
today that the company
successfully webcast
live footage of the
launch of NASA’s
Interstellar Boundary
Explorer mission, or
IBEX, for Chicago’s
Adler Planetarium and
Astronomy Museum on
October 19, 2008. OVS
integrated live video of
the launch itself with
separate live pre-event
and post-event
commentary from the
Adler Planetarium, which
used the webcast as a
“live exhibit” on the
IBEX mission to educate
viewers at participating
museums around the
United States.
“OVS is proud of the
role we were able to
play in helping the
Adler Planetarium
broadcast on the
Internet this unique and
engaging ‘live exhibit’
on NASA’s IBEX mission,”
commented OVS CEO Tim
Treanor. “This webcast
represents one of the
first, most successful
‘live exhibits’ of its
kind.”
Adler Planetarium
reported that, in
addition to the network
of participating museums
around the country that
showed the “live
exhibit,” a significant
crowd also gathered to
watch the live webcast
on a large screen at the
Adler Planetarium booth
at the Association of
Science and Technology
Centers (ASTC)
conference the same day.
Additional coverage of
the webcast occurred on
Slashdot and the Wii
News Channel. More
information on the IBEX
mission is at
www.ibex.swri.edu/news/pr.shtml.
OVS’ video broadcast
services were used for
video signal
acquisition, encoding
and distribution of the
webcast in a format
optimized for
participating museums
and end users. The OVS
Broadcast Operations
Center™ managed live
ingest of the video
signal via satellite and
encoding of it for
streaming delivery.
Prior to the webcast,
the OVS technical team
conducted a conference
call with IT personnel
at participating
museums, to ensure their
familiarity with how the
webcast could be
accessed and how to
troubleshoot common
issues that might arise.
As a result, the museums
reported no subsequent
difficulties in playing
and sharing the webcast
at their facilities.
Use of OVS’ Internet
broadcasting solutions
for the NASA IBEX
mission launch builds on
the company's commitment
to promote open and
transparent government,
and the importance of
providing a range of
communication tools to
citizens and government
alike.
